Measure the change first
The scale difference is a useful starting data point, but it does not reveal whether the change came from water, glycogen, gut contents, or tissue. Record the same scale, similar clothing, and the time of each measurement when possible.
A large percentage change or severe symptoms should shift the conversation from performance planning to medical assessment.
Recovery depends on the clock
An athlete with a 24-hour recovery window can often distribute recovery differently from an athlete who competes two hours after weighing in. The shorter the window, the less room there is to correct a large loss without stomach discomfort or incomplete recovery.

Fluids are only one part of recovery
Post-weigh-in recovery also has to consider sodium and other electrolytes, carbohydrate availability, food tolerance, sleep, and the demands of warm-up and competition. A large meal or large fluid bolus can be uncomfortable when the gut is stressed.
Use an electrolyte-containing plan from a qualified professional, take small tolerable amounts, monitor how you feel, and avoid forcing fluid to hit a spreadsheet number.
Track the recovery trend
Monitor body weight, urination, thirst, alertness, and gastrointestinal tolerance as you recover. The goal is a return toward normal function, not simply a fast rebound on the scale.

Safety limits and stop signs
The calculator uses the lower end of a published 125–150% fluid-replacement range as a starting estimate. That number is deliberately not presented as a dose or schedule: hydration status, electrolytes, kidney and heart health, medications, body size, and time to competition all change the right plan.
Never attempt to “catch up” by chugging a large amount of plain water. Stop and seek urgent medical help for confusion, fainting, chest symptoms, severe weakness, an irregular heartbeat, or persistent vomiting.
Worked example
An athlete who weighs 170 lb before the scale and 165 lb afterward has a measured change of 5 lb, or about 2.9% of body mass. The calculator converts that change to about 2.3 kg and shows a starting estimate near 2.8 L, which should be discussed with a professional and distributed according to the actual recovery window.
