BJJ weight is more than a number
For BJJ, the relevant number may include the Gi or No-Gi uniform and depends on the event's rules. A plan should also account for age group, sex, belt, division, tournament schedule, travel, and the time between the scale and the first match.
Use the calculator for the part you can control: a stable baseline, gradual nutrition changes, and a calendar that reflects the real tournament.
IBJJF weigh-in context
IBJJF publishes separate weigh-in guidance for Gi and No-Gi competitions: athletes weigh before their first fight, have one opportunity, and may be disqualified if they do not make the registered division. Tournament pages also specify the official measurement and schedule.
Other BJJ organizations may use different allowances or procedures. The current event page and rule book are more authoritative than a generic class chart.
Why same-day BJJ changes the strategy
When the first match is close to weigh-in, there is less time to correct dehydration, gastrointestinal upset, or low energy. The safest competition plan is usually one that does not depend on a large final-hour change.
Use the same-day versus day-before planner to see why the recovery window belongs in your class decision.
Build food and recovery around matches
Use familiar, easy-to-tolerate meals and pack what the venue allows. A small food plan should cover the gap between weigh-in, warm-up, matches, and the next match without depending on a single large meal.
The low-residue food list is a planning reference, not a substitute for a personalized nutrition plan.
Safety limits and stop signs
Do not plan a same-day BJJ cut around sauna use, plastic clothing, laxatives, vomiting, or severe fluid restriction. A short recovery window increases the chance that a dehydration strategy carries into the match.
Stop for confusion, fainting, severe cramps, chest symptoms, unusual shortness of breath, or persistent vomiting. Children and adolescents should use age-appropriate medical and governing-body guidance, not an adult internet formula.
Worked example
A 145 lb No-Gi athlete whose first match begins shortly after weigh-in should compare the event's official class limit with a stable training weight and arrive close enough that normal food and fluid intake can resume. A calculated “possible” class is not automatically a practical or safe class.
How to use this tool
Step 1
Read the tournament page
Confirm Gi or No-Gi measurement, division rules, scale time, number of attempts, and the first-match schedule.
Step 2
Enter your real baseline
Use a stable morning weight and set the event dates in combat mode instead of using a last-minute scale reading.
Step 3
Pack and review
Use the calorie target and trend to prepare familiar meals, then review the plan with a qualified professional.

Frequently asked questions
Does IBJJF weigh me with my Gi?
IBJJF says Gi athletes weigh in with the Gi and No-Gi athletes weigh in with the No-Gi uniform. Event instructions control, so confirm the exact uniform and measurement details before registering.
How much recovery time do I get after a BJJ weigh-in?
At IBJJF events, weigh-in occurs before the first fight and there is one opportunity to make weight. Your division schedule determines the practical recovery window, which can be short.
Can I change divisions after I miss weight?
IBJJF event guidance says athletes who miss their registered weight are disqualified from that division and cannot change divisions on tournament day. Always read the current event page and rules before registering.
